Hi Susan,
please note that the wiki page you mentioned does not contain the recommendation to run
../autogen.sh
but it tells to run
./autogen.sh
(note the single dot).
And if you have run the command you mentioned in the initial mail, then it's natural that autogen 
step was skipped, missing the generation of required makefiles, and subsequent error you mentioned. 
But that should have emitted an error after that step, while you wrote "the first 2 instructions 
produce no errors".
