I think you can do:

SAL_LOG=1 ./soffice


Sure, and that is how I personally always do it. But for some reason
instructions always seem to prefer to show the separate export command.

BTW, is it really recommended to change directory to instdir/program (in
order to run ./soffice)? Isn't that a pain, to have to change directory
back and forth between make commands and running soffice? Personally I stay
in the top build directory, and run the built LibreOffice with
instdir/program/soffice.exe. Not much more to type, if you use command
history in the shell.
