That's a well-known shortcoming of standard C assert, inherited by C++. See <http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2014/n4154.pdf> "Operator assert" for a potential way this may change in a future C++ standard.

(And our own SAL_WARN etc. macros are careful to avoid this problem, but their semantics are different from those of standard assert.)
