FWIW, for the font size we ended up with
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/commit/?id=780eb9f704e7a61f43624a2c03b4f6a15647a1a1 to
set the optimal width on it. Might be worth someone investigating is the style drop down would
benefit from similar love.
