In order to preserve the original Smart-Art object – we would plan on loading the entire XML nodes and attributes of Smart-Art to property maps (e.g. Miklos's great 'InteropGrabBag').
I would probably try & preserve the */diagrams/*.xml files verbatim. com::sun::star::xml::dom::* has functionality to stream that in and out of memory, there is some initial code doing that for PPTX in oox/source/ppt/dgmlayout.cxx. HTH, -- Thorsten
