You can't avoid testing if you develop software, but one systematic way is to read the release notes of major releases, there such changes are documented, e.g. for 4.1: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/4.1#API_Changes and then see if any of the changes API's are used by your extension.
