Seeing that dialog means the type detection has failed.  There is no
easy way to trigger it intentionally unless you are hitting a bug or
limitation in the type detection code.

Actually there is. Try opening a file whose format we don't support. Any obscure format that you have that libreoffice couldn't possibly open? Or you can just make something up.
