AFAIUI you are trying to extend the area, which is responsible for mouse 
clicks showing the menu. In this case the code you should modify is

  // if the separated dropdown symbol is hit,
  // execute the popup immediately
  if( ! ImplGetSymbolRect().IsInside( rMEvt.GetPosPixel() ) )
  {

The comment explains the current logic.

Or maybe I did not understand you...?
