Just curious:

Why an specific file encryption handling in yet another desktop
application instead of general solutions, like encrypted storage
or transmission media (eg. filesystem or blockdevice level ?).

Sending over your harddisk around using snail mail for document
exchange and handing out the passphrase for that encrypted media to
another person kind of defeats the purpose of having encrypted storage
in the first place

Hence the need for document-level encryption.
