this was apparently not enough, as some of those pesky footnotes are quite resistant and hide in unexpected section column frames... this additional patch should exterminate the pests more thoroughly and should be applied to libreoffice-3-5 and libreoffice-3-4, as the crash is a regression in 3.4: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/commit/?id=962d0500c4debaef43e5f146e47e08c66d851562
