Why not?  At least I would naively have expected that it does.

I think the convention is that make clean just removes object files, and
make distclean removes files generated by configure. So "./configure;
make clean; make" was a valid use-case till now.

Right, true.  (Just noticed that we have a proper "make distclean," too.)
