I stumbled on this piece of code in

registry/tools/regcompare.cxx

There must be a finesse in lines 326, 330, and so on that I missed
miserably...

If the string is empty, it adds the text.
If the string already has some content, it adds the text with a
preceding coma to separate the elements.
