Hello Nguyen,
Sorry for answering that late...

The students who are working on the project are already on the list;
that means, they read your emails.
Cool! Could you present them or let them introduce themselves?

I've talked to the students and they said that they like both Impress
and Base so this sounds a good idea.
There are plenty of work to be done in those area: so nice!
Working with experts here is a good opportunity but we don't to slow
Christian (and experience developers
in general)
Mentoring new hackers often implies slowing down our own hacking... but
it can be very rewarding if the students manage to learn and continue
hacking with us after the project term.
Base desperately needs people, almost as desperately as the
Documentation Team.
I see, however, I see no tasks related to Base under the idea page
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/Gsoc/Ideas
And that there is only an easy hack on bugzilla marked with Base
-> EasyHack: LibreOffice Base - Find and replace
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32506
Well... Base still needs some love and there is no core hacker knowing
it correctly. Having students working on it would be nice, but the
mentoring would be more complex.
On the old easy hacks page, we had an item to move Base to use sqlite as
instead of hsqldb... has it been done already? In a general way,
removing as much Java dependencies as possible is a good projet and Base
is full of these.
I think Svg is already being worked on so it might be all
completed before GsoC starts.
You can consider the team of students as another GSoC team.
They will need to do something else that requires programming.
Indeed SVG import is done by Marco.
5. Perhaps working on a needed Extension might be good?
It is, indeed. But I assume that it is not C++ but some other language
like Python
will be use if we go for an extension. Is that right?
You can choose any UNO language you want for an extension... which means
C++ is OK. As an interesting extension project, there is the CMIS
protocol handler to implement. This can also turn out to be core hacking
as there are quite some helpers in the core for this. It's not listed on
any wiki page ATM as the project idea is too new, but I'ld be one of the
mentors here.
Regards,
