If I need to add a file to, say the 'impress' repository, how do I
do this? If I use ./g add afile.cxx it stops when on the main repo

but it doesn't seem to work either (it doesn't seem to find the file).
Hey - Tor has a great answer too - but I just tend to:
cd sd/
git add source/foo/baa.cxx
which works just as well. The 'g' stuff is not that elegant, Bjoern is
working hard to persuade us to use it much much less, (only for external
pieces, translations etc. AFAIR), so this may improve in future.
