on machines without curl? Maybe a better approarch is to see if `type -p
curl` returns anything.

No, it will just set the curl variable to 'curl not found'

curl is required at the autogen.sh stage: if I try to run ./autogen.sh
without any curl package installed, I get this error:

configure: error: install curl to run this script
