Jan, you seem to have added that regex. Perhaps you still know how
this is supposed to work and can fix it?

This also sounds as if it would fix the issue that if you did

sh autogen.sh .... GMCS=foobar that foobar is added to an other option (which
is not supposed to handle it) - and thus breaks the mono build for me.
