Hi,
so, a quick update on what happened so far:
Today, I have setup the new/additional web server host together with 
Christian (thanks a lot!). Christian (even more thanks!) had the good 
idea to first to some benchmarking to see how things perform on this 
beast (big CPU, lots of RAM, SSD in RAID, ...) - and to our bad 
surprise, the same problems occur: After a certain amount of concurrent 
connections, everything is extremely slow.
It seems this is now the time to finally begin switching to nginx, 
outperforming our current software quite a tad. ;-) I'll follow-up with 
details soon, but I plan to either do this during the weekend or early 
next week. It's an ideal testbed to start with, without moving all 
services at once.
