Is it possible to do the same in Libreoffice writer?

Yes, fairly simple.
For both you need a datasource and the window Datasources (F4, View>Datasources) open.
Select the row with the data of your choise.

now two options:
 a. if you have database fields in the document,
On the toolbar with the datasource windows, click the button called Data to fields.

 b. no databasefields.
On the toolbar with the datasource windows, click button called Data to text. This will open a window with some options.
