Minutes of the Design Hangout: 2017-Mar-16

Present: Eric, Tomaz, Jay, Samuel, Akshay (JanD)

Organization

* How to work with both the design team and end users to improve LibreOffice UI/UX (Eric Ficheux)
   + Follows UX improvement requests from a user survey in Nantes
     + 5000 users asked a couple of open questions online
     + 75% are fine with LibO
     + First results indicate design relevant issues regarding printer setup and bullets/numbering
   + Goal is to study, make proposals and implement
     + happy to get the results and to help in analyzing (Heiko)

* Major release update
   + Q1/18 - next steps?
   + Tender for design; Budget?
     + will ask the tdf team next Monday (Heiko)
   + New branding needed (KJ)
   + Coordinating work with Marketing team (maybe some stuff for conference?) (KJ)
   + we could have started with releasing of 5.0 (Jay)
   + we should hire an experience designer > have a tender (Jay, Heiko)

* Custom Shapes
   + Had a kick-off today
     + http://pad.documentfoundation.org/p/UX-CustomShapes

GSoC projects

* Ideas do not have code pointers, making things harder for new gsoc students
* Discussion on Customisation dialog (Akshay)
* Akshay will do the special character project mentored by Samuel
   + limited scope without OCR part, which would be very pity as OCR would be a killer feature
   + maybe completed by another project
   + https://user-prompt.com/libreoffice-design-session-special-character/

Tickets

* New default bullets
   + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106507
   + Not a fan as presented (Stuart c4)
   + Better we align the bullet/numbering workflow/dialog to what has been done with area fill style
     meaning presets, show properties on selection, ability to add own presets... (Heiko c7)
   + Users actually requested the shown dash (Eric)
   + Looking forward to see the design (Jay)

* Color picker
   + New default color palette https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87538
     + no of rows
       + 8 rows http://bugs.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=131473 (Heiko)
       + 9 rows http://bugs.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=131574 (Jay)
          + don't like scrolling in that dialog, so rather 9 than 8 rows (opinion Cor)
     + survey runs, results indicate equal acceptance of v2 and v3
     + lets have a talk during the week with Thibaut (Jay)
   + different number of rows based on OS or DE
     + https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106458
     + was a GSoC project two years ago, maybe kendy knows (Samuel)

That makes definitely sense. The question was asked at https://user-prompt.com/de/libreoffice-design-session-shapes/ (full list there) based on what DIA offers http://dia-installer.de/shapes/index.html.en
I guess many people reply about what they have heard rather than what is needed ;-).
