Hello Dave,
It's one thing to advocate, and another thing to find a sustainable stream
of developers who can develop TB or any other email client.
Anyway, this being said, it seems that the Mozilla Foundation is explaining
a different story about TB . Check this :
http://blog.mozilla.org/beyond-the-code/2012/07/09/about-the-future-of-thunderbird/
What this means is that TB is not going away. The community can contribute
to it, and I think that's what supposed to happen. I'm also convinced
there's some real business opportunity around it, so I'm not all too
worried about it.
Best,
Charles.
