* Arriving to Brno
Hotel Vista is the hotel where most LibreOffice Conference visitors are
staying. To get to the hotel from the public transport hub (Hlavní nádraží)
in front of the main train station is relatively easy. You need to take the
tram #1 towards Řečkovice and get off at Hudcova stop (the tram goes every
6 minutes and the journey takes 17 minutes). From the stop, you need to
walk up the Hudcova street and after approx. 250m you'll see the hotel on
the left-hand side.

The last tram from Hlavní nádraží (Main train station) is 22:40, followed
by night buses N90 and N91, during work days running every half hour till
2 am in the morning and then every one hour. On Friday and Saturday every
half hour the whole night.

To get to the venue, you need to take the tram #1 towards Řečkovice (the
same as to Hotel Vista, see above) and get off at the Semilasso stop (the
journey takes 15 minutes). The venue is on the FIT BUT campus 200m from the
stop.

Public transport in Brno is really very well organized, on time and clean
and it's waste of money to use taxi unless you travel during late night
(work days) or you are in hurry. If you still insist on taxi, there are
taxi stands near Main station/downtown. Expect approximately 250 CZK for a
ride. For the same amount you can buy 5 days public transport ticket - the
place to buy it is an international counter at Main railway station. Zones
needed are 100+101, make sure to validate ticket in the tram/bus.

To plan your travel around, you can use
http://jizdnirady.idnes.cz/brno/spojeni/ or PubTran Android application.

* Pre-registration event and Welcome party
The event that takes place in the evening of the community day prior to the
conference at Ventana Café. You can meet others before the conference
starts, pick your badge and conference bag, check where the venue is
because the party is held in a cafe just across the street. There will be
cold buffet and drinks available.

Where: Ventana Café, Božetěchova 1, Brno (campus of FIT BUT)
When: 17:00-22:00 Tuesday September 6th

* Weather
We had a wonderful end of the summer this week in Brno but we woke up into
rainy day today, forecast for the next week predicts cloudy sky and
occasional showers/rains. Temperatures during day are going to be between
19 °C - 27 °C and night temperatures around 15 °C. Bring your umbrella and
warmer clothes for nights. And you know, never trust weather forecasts!

* Currency and language
In the Czech Republic the currency is called koruna (abbreviated 'Kč' or
'CZK') and in English it is sometimes referred to as Czech crown. Exchange
rate is approximately 1 EUR is 27 CZK and 1 USD = 24,50 CZK. There are many
Foreign Currency Exchange offices in the city center close to the main
railway and bus stations and offers better rates than banks (and no fees).
Smaller shops usually don't accept Euro but many super/hypermarkets do
(limited amount). You will find ATMs on every street corner in the city.
All banks has at least one ATM outside every branch. International cards
are accepted in supermarkets and nicer restaurants but usually not in pubs
or small shops. Contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere. It's
better to carry at least some amount of Czech crowns.

The official language is Czech, a West Slavic language spoken by over 10
million people. It's close to the Slovak language. As Brno is becoming IT
center of the Central Europe and multicultural city, English is pretty
often understood, mostly by younger generation. Public transport in Brno is
English/German friendly.

Safe travels and see you soon.
