Das Tastaturlayout muss die akzent-tasten als sogenannte Deadkeys
behandeln. Vermutlich hast du eine "nodedkeys" Variante eingestellt.
Wo genau man das umstellt hängt von der verwendeten Desktopumgebung
ab, aber die meisten haben eine Einstellung für Tastatur, bei der man
diverse layouts hinzufügen kann.

Unter opensuse: yast -> System ->System-Tastaturlayout -> "Deutsch
(mit "toten" Tasten)".
