Inzwischen konnte ich aber das Problem (vorläufig) beheben.
Ich hatte für openSUSE das Repo
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/openSUSE_11.4/
mit eingebunden. Dadurch kam cups-1.5 mit hplip-3.11.10 auf
den PC. Der Downgrade auf cups-1.4 aus dem Standardrepo hat
das Problem beseitigt.
